As an Environmental Educator, I want to make learning a fun and rewarding process that helps grow the students mind and value for education. I believe that the most impactful learning is transferable to other subjects and accommodates different learning types. While teaching elementary school students, my goal is to spark their love for the environment around them through hands-on activities within the lesson plans. This young developmental age is so important and it is essential to have different ways of engaging students as they discover what their learning style is. I do this by finding ways to connect students to the learning outcomes in individual ways that encourage them and cultivate passion towards the environment. Understanding that educating is not a straight path for each student allows me to give students a more individualized experience. Having variety within my lesson plans gets more students engaged with the material. As we have been doing our field trip lessons I notice that some kids are more interested when we are hands-on in the mud exploring while some students enjoy learning from a distance and get creative in their scientific field notebooks. As an educator it is important to play into a child's passion and celebrate diversity while encouraging them to reach out of their comfort zone. Finding ways to motivate and cultivate that love for learning is what makes it sustainable. If a student is passionate about writing, have them write a poem that relates to the subject. If a student likes art, have them draw pictures in their scientific notebooks. I still have the same learning outcomes in my lesson plans, but there are so many paths that a student could take to get there.
